The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has successfully compiled a set of regulatory and regulatory standards to reduce emissions from diesel engines. Other sectors identified in diesel engines need repair or adaptation are seaports, construction, transportation, and agriculture. Each program provides financial and technical assistance to stakeholders in reducing emissions from their diesel fleets in the way effective and efficient.
The Agency is devoting considerable efforts to ensure the successful implementation of new standards for diesel fuel and new engines diesel standards proposed regulation that will act as the base control program of the EPA diesel.
On 1 June 2006, refiners began to produce ultra clean low sulfur diesel (ULSD) with a sulfur level that is at or below 15 parts per million (ppm) for use in highway diesel engines. Low sulfur (500 ppm) diesel fuel (LSD) for any non-Road Diesel engines currently required and are replaced by 2010 with ultra-low sulfur fuel for these machines Diesel Locomotives and marine engines.
Besides reducing emissions from existing diesel fleet, these clean fuels allow the use of technologies advanced new engines. Technologies like particulate traps, capable of reducing emissions 90% and more that are required under the new standards are already being phased out in the road sector. These technologies are phased plan in the road sector in 2011. Using cleaner fuels and engines, EPA also is working to reduce emissions from large commercial marine diesel vessels like cruise ships and container ships large.
Together, these programs will provide enormous long term benefits to public health and the environment.
